The first trailer for Pet Sematary has arrived, and it looks way more scarier than the original bringing Stephen King's classic story to life for a whole new generation. While this might be the second adaptation of King's 1983 novel, judging from the just-released trailer, this could very well prove to be the definitive one.

For those not familiar with the story, let's catch you up to speed. Doctor Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) moves his family from the city to a charming small town in Maine. As it turns out the front of their new house is right by a busy highway while the yard meets the border of a forest out the back. Due to many of the local pets meeting their demise on the road, the town's children set up a "Pet Sematary" in the forest for their beloved animals to rest in peace. But not all is as it seems.

Their new neighbour Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) warns that the cemetery is built upon an ancient cursed burial ground, where it's said that the dead things buried there have been known to come back to life. Oh dear. When the family cat, Church, is hit by a car, Louis and Jud decide to bury the beloved cat there, instead of breaking the news to Louis' daughter Ellie (Jeté Laurence). The cat comes back to life, but he's not the happy cat they once had. I suppose that's the cost of bringing your cat back from dead. Dead or alive, they're still a twat!

Of course, Louis questions what would happen if you were to bury a person there. Apparently, it happened in the past with dire consequences. However, when another tragedy strikes the Creed family, Louis ignores the warning, and you get the idea of what's gonna happen next.

There's no denying Pet Sematary is one of King's darker novels. He nearly didn't publish it himself. His wife convinced him otherwise, and it went on to become a bestseller. King's writing is at its best when portraying people who are stricken with grief willing to do anything to get a departed loved one back. The novel did it exceptionally well. It's always been a personal favourite of mine, but the 1988 adaptation ended up being uber cheesy.

However, this first trailer shows massive promise and looks to remain for the most part true to the novel. Have a watch below.

Chilling or what?
