Dolly Parton's Netflix series 'Heartstrings' features a cute gay love story and it has all the feels.

When I heard Dolly Parton was releasing an anthology TV series where each episode would be based on one of her iconic songs, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. However, I can honestly say the country music legend really delivered the goods with Heartstrings.

The series deals with everything from family, to love, faith and even sexuality. There's no denying that Dolly has a massive queer fan base, so it really comes as no surprise that she'd also share the love with her rainbow fans as well.

In the introduction to Two Doors Down, Parton revealed how she was inspired to write the song in 1977 by her on-the-road family, which included “all kinds of people”.

“Different colours, gay, lesbian, transgender and all different faiths,” the singer explained.

“What it all comes down to is love is love, in road families and real families."

“Life might not always be a party, but you’re better off if you can just enjoy yourself and accept and love the people around you.”

The episode follows Tyler (Broadway star Andy Mientus) as he attends his sister's picture-perfect wedding. The problem is he's in the closet and is in love with his overbearing mother's assistant Cole (GBF’s Michael J. Willett).

Events around the wedding sees several other secrets begin to unravel leading to a dramatic coming out scene that threatens to tear the family apart. Of course, this being a Dolly Parton series, there's happy endings all round and it's all kinds of adorable.

“I was told that Dolly herself wanted to do an LGBTQ-inclusive episode based on the fact that she has such a universal appeal,” explained episode screenwriter, Mark B. Perry in an interview with NewNowNext.

“Her fan base crosses every demographic, and you stand side-by-side with people you might not socialise with at a Dolly Parton concert.

While the episode has been praised by many there are still those out there who would like to pretend LGBTQ+ people don't exist. Perry wasn't surprised when several people walked out of the screening at Parton's Dollywood.

“Well, I grew up in the South, so I call myself an expat Southerner, and I felt that I had a chance to write fairly and authentically about some of the attitudes in the South about being gay,” Perry added.

“So I was not surprised when I heard that some people got up and walked out. But it did make me a little sad [because] there’s nothing offensive in my episode, as far as I’m concerned.
