It looks like Tinder is stepping it up in regards to looking after its LGBTIQ users. That dating app is launching a brand new safety feature for its traveling users called Traveller Alert. The new feature informs users of any possible dangers they may face in countries with homophobic and transphobic legislation.

Once a user lands in an at-risk country, the Traveller Alert will recognise their location, and they will not automatically appear on Tinder in that country. They will then be given the option to remain hidden or opt into making their profile public.

Essentially, the new feature offers protection from law enforcement agencies and possible homophobic aggressors that might look to target members of the LGBTIQ community through social media platforms.

"We fundamentally believe that everyone should be able to love who they want to love – and we strive to reflect this in everything we do at Tinder." says Tinder CEO, Elie Seidman, "It is unthinkable that, in 2019, there are still countries with legislation in place that deprives people of this basic right."

With more and more LGBTIQ members choosing to use Tinder over other dating and pickup apps, it seems the app is taking the increase in LGBTIQ users seriously. Tinder recently released a sexual orientation and gender option to be a more inclusive experience for its users.

"We serve all communities – no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation – and we are proud to offer features that help keep them safe." adds Seidman.

To create the new feature, Tinder sourced date from ILGA World's most recent State-Sponsored Homophobia report to determine which countries users will be alerted in.

"We hope that this development will raise awareness amongst all Tinder users, and help protect people of diverse sexual orientations in the 69 countries around the world that currently still criminalise same-sex love." Explains Executive Director for ILGA World, André du Plessis.

"We work hard to change practices, laws, and attitudes that put LGBTQ people at risk – including the use of dating apps to target our community – but in the meantime, the safety of our communities also depends on supporting their digital safety."

We applaud Tinder's latest development. It really does show this goes beyond just cashing in on the pink dollar. They are actually supporting and attempting to provide a safer experience for their LGBTIQ users.

The new feature is expected to roll out in the coming days.
