Some goodbyes are bittersweet. With the trailer for the Sense8 series finale, that thought is further cemented. From its very first episode, Sense8 was applauded for its thoughtful and complicated portrayal of its diverse cast of lead characters. It celebrated diversity through its representation of race, gender and sexuality and when Netflix announced that it would not be renewing the series after its second season fans were in shock. Netflix found itself having its very own Firefly moment.

With the season 2 cliffhanger leaving so much unanswered, fans petition long and hard. Within a month of Netflix announcing its cancellation, the unimaginable happened. It had paid off. Co-creator, Lana Wachowski announced at the end of June that Netflix had come to a compromise and would allow the team to make a two-hour special to wrap up the series.

Today we finally get to see the trailer for the grand finale, and it promises one hell of an emotional sendoff capturing everything fans have grown to love from Sense8.

The trailer asks the very question that has agonised philosophers for centuries and the same question that has been at the heart of the series. What does it mean to be human?

Will we get an answer? We will just have to wait and see, but one thing that is guaranteed is fans will finally have their closure to a beloved series that was cut short way too soon.

While the farewell is bittersweet it is also a reminder that during this era of streaming services, it is important more than ever to support programs that celebrate and showcase diversity. Not only for the reason that they may continue to be made, but it holds the door open so that similar stories can be told.
