You'd really have to be living under a rock not to have heard of the name RuPaul. After hosting eleven seasons of Drag Race, four All Stars, this year's Drag Race UK, and new scripted comedy series, AJ and the Queen about to premiere on Netflix, don't expect the Emmy-winning 59-year-old to slow down anytime soon.

Now, RuPaul has a new record to add to his long list of achievements, the first-ever drag queen to grace the cover of Vanity Fair.

Taken by iconic photographer Annie Leibovitz, Mama Ru can be seen wearing a stunning crystal-covered bodysuit and beautifully styled platinum white hair reaching to the heavens. In short, it's a fierce AF cover, and a nice little reminder the Vogue made the mistake of snubbing the queen earlier this year for Kim Kardashian to appear on their cover.

The feature is one hell of a read that sees RuPaul discusses his experiences with acting, drag, personal philosophies, and the perception that drag culture is breaking into the mainstream.

RuPaul says that although a 'superficial aspect' of drag has become mainstream, 'true drag' never will.

"A superficial aspect of drag is mainstream. Like, the 'Ooh, girl' or 'Hey girlfriend!' or 'Yaaas.' That's mainstream culture,' he explains, "But true drag really will never be mainstream."

RuPaul goes on to explain that "true drag" is more than just the act of dressing up as a different gender

"Because true drag has to do with seeing that this world is an illusion, and that everything that you say you are and everything it says that you are on your driver's licence, it's all an illusion."

"Most people will never in their lives understand what that is. Because they don't have the operating system to understand that duality."

Ru then proceeds to deliver the TEA by reflecting on his journey from nightclub performer to the international superstar he is today.

"You know how on the plane they say put the mask on your face before you put the mask on your child's face? It starts with me. I cannot help someone unless I am first having fun or being fulfilled."

"I don't do this because I want to be a role model. If somebody can get something from what I'm doing, I say right on, sister. But that's not why I do it."

January will also see the release of his first-ever scripted Netflix series, AJ and the Queen.

Co-created with Sex and the City's Michael Patrick King, Ru stars as Robert Lee, aka drag queen Ruby Red, who goes on a cross-country roadshow after being swindled by hustlers only to find himself stuck with recently orphaned 10-year-old AJ (Izzy G.) who stows away in his van.
