Queensland ends law forcing married transgender people to divorce!

This is exciting news for Queensland and even more exciting news for the transgender community!

Transgender people in Queensland will now be able to stay married to their partners when they affirm legal recognition of their gender on their birth certificate under new legislation passed by the state government on Wednesday.

Previously trans people were forced to divorce their partner and be unmarried before they were legally allowed to amend their birth certificate. This essentially meant they had to decide between divorcing the person they love or having legal identification that didn't reflect who they were.

The law was previously written before same-sex marriages were made legal in Australia and have been of great concern for many during the YES campaign and how the marriage equality vote would affect transgender people. Wednesday's vote amended the state's Births, Deaths and Marriages Act and now recognises the existing marriages of those who undertake gender reassignment.

“This is not a cost or a consequence any law of this state should impose on members of our community,” said the state’s attorney-general, Yvette D’Ath. “It has been unjust and unfair and I’m proud to say this distressing choice will no longer be a requirement in Queensland."

“I hope delivering this reform will go some way to helping the transgender community to live their lives openly and without judgment.”

For me personally, I know quite a few people that have been affected directly by these laws, and I'm beyond happy that they finally have this win. It means more to them than we can ever know. So a special CONGRATULATIONS to these people. Not only can you embrace your true selves and be FINALLY recognised under governmental law, but you can do so without the cruel sacrifice of the people you love.

Queensland is the third state to introduce the amendment after marriage equality was made a reality last year, and we're sure it won't be the last. We are truly living in exciting times! Once again congratulations and this is just another example that LOVE ALWAYS WINS!
