Move over Abbey Road, there's a new crossing in town! Following in the footsteps of cities around the world, south London has become home to the country's first permanent rainbow crossing.

Located outside Brockwell Park in Herne Hill, the crossing was unveiled by Lambeth council to show "show solidarity with the LGBTQ community" and people have been encouraged to upload photos to their social media accounts #WeAreLambeth and #WalkTheRainbow.

"We have a tradition of championing equality and LGBTQ rights – this crossing celebrates that and is an example of our bold and progressive thinking," shared Councillor Sonia Winifred, Cabinet member for equalities and culture.

"We've come a long way and Lambeth is proud to be leading the way."

The colours used on the crossings are the same as those featured in the Pride flag used around the world to represent and also show support for the LGBTIQ community.

The Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Ibrahim Dogus added that "This crossing is a symbol of the pride we have in our flourishing LGBTQ community and will light up Herne Hill with its message of inclusivity."

"It is just one of the many ways that we will continue to stand in solidarity with all those who face discrimination in our borough and beyond."

This is not the first time that there have been rainbow crossings in London. Back in June, there were three semi-permanent crossings painted in the city in support for of 2019 UK Pride. However, this is the first permanent rainbow crossing and is sure to become somewhat of a tourist attraction in much the same way that the Abbey Road crossing has become.
