There has long been speculation that Buffy The Vampire Slayer would sooner or later come under the reboot knife, and it now looks to be happening a lot sooner than anyone expected.

It's been 15 years since UPN first aired "Chosen," the final episode of Joss Whedon's career-making and widely beloved series, and now its creator has confirmed he's bringing it back for an inclusive reboot starring an as-yet-uncast woman of colour taking up the role of the Slayer.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that 20th Century Fox Television, who produced the original, is currently developing a new take on the drama that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar in the titular role. Writer Monica Breen, who previously worked with Whedon on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, has been hired to not only pen the reboot but will also be serving as showrunner.

Whedon will reportedly serve as executive producer and has been working closely with Breen on the script, and will feature a woman of colour stepping into the role made famous by Gellar.

A network isn't attached to the project as of yet, but producers of Fox 21 TV Studios will pitch the Buffy-reboot to streaming and cable services later this year which is bound to create a massive bidding war as to who will provide a home for the "new" Buffy.

Sources say the new version will be a contemporary build on the mythology of the original. Much like today's world, the reboot will be "richly diverse, with some aspects of the series, like the flagship, seen as metaphors for issues facing society today."

Exciting news and as a massive fan of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff series Angel, I'm excited to see what Whedon and Breen will come up with. However, I hope its a reboot that expands the mythology left from its finale like the continued comic books have, rather than just using the same characters with new stories.

If they go down this route, there is the potential to bring back the original core cast for various cameos which would add substance to the new take while having an already established fanbase supporting it. An older Buffy, Willow, and Xander making an appearance is something I would welcome with open arms.

Aw memories!

Currently, it's unclear whether Whedon will have an additional role other than executive producer due to his other commitments, but as news unfolds, we will be keeping you updated.
