He has one of the most iconic beards in Hollywood and now it's no more. Aquaman star Jason Momoa has shaved off his beard for the first time since 2012 to "bring awareness that plastics are killing the planet."

The 39-year-old turned to Youtube to share footage of himself shearing his signature beard off.

“Goodbye DROGO, AQUAMAN, DECLAN, BABA,” he wrote in the video's description making reference to the various characters he portrayed with the now-departed beard.

“I’m SHAVING this beast off, It’s time to make a change,” Momoa wrote, “A change for the better ... for my kids, your kids, the world. Let’s make a positive change for the health of our planet.”

The video is a promo for a new range of recyclable canned water. Momoa adds later in the clip that he hates going on an airplane with a small plastic water bottle and that “there’s only one thing that can really help our planet and save our planet, as long as we recycle … that’s aluminum.”

“About 75 percent of all aluminium ever used is still in circulation today, and it’s 100 percent recyclable, so you drink the can, and about in 60 days, it’ll be back. 100 percent,” he explains.

The actor’s call for action comes amid the increasing awareness of the negative impact that plastics, and in particular single-use plastics, are having on the world. An estimated 19 billion pounds of plastic enter our oceans annually threatening wildlife. Researchers warn that the disturbing tally will double within the next six years if the world does not change the way they use plastics and recycle.

One thing is for sure, after the loss of such an iconic beard it's time to start taking recycling more seriously!
