If the Hollywood rumour mill is correct, Jake Gyllenhaal might very well be bringing a little bit of mystery to Sony's and Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

The actor is currently in talks to play one of Spider-Man's greatest foes, Mysterio. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko first introduced the villain back in 1964 as Quentin Beck, a special effects expert who used his talents to create elaborate illusions to commit a multitude of crimes and go up against everyone's favourite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Gyllenhaal already has an exciting history with the superhero. When Tobey Maguire who starred in Sam Raimi's originally trilogy injured himself between Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, the actor was briefly considered to take over the role if Maguire couldn't return. Fate had its way, Maguire returned to the role, and years later it now seems Gyllenhaal be playing villain rather than hero.

With Mysterio's talents ranging from hypnotism to robotics, he's repeatedly proven to be a worthy adversary of Spidey's going beyond just brute force. Excluding Bruce Campbell's various cameos in the Sam Raimi franchise that would have eventually revealed him as the villain in the cancelled 4th film, this will be Mysterio's grand debut on the big screen.

While we're not sure how much of the source material will make it to the big screen, it's a 100% guarantee that Mysterio will give Spider-Man a run for his money.

Tom Holland will return as titular hero in the upcoming sequel, but it's anyone's guess as to what the story will be. There's still that slight problem of bursting into dust at the end of Avengers: Infinity War that still needs to be sorted out.

Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel is slated for release July 5, 2019.
