It looks like the DC cinematic universe is about to get a massive shakeup and farewell its Man of Steel.

If reports are correct, it seems Henry Cavill, who has played Superman in three films, is hanging up the red cape and parting ways with Warner Bros. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill was set to make a cameo in Shazam!, but wasn't able to due to scheduling conflicts. However, it seems further discussions about future appearances as Superman have broken down, resulting in the actor leaving the franchise entirely.

Cavill's departure also seems in part as a result of the studio shifting its focus to its solo Supergirl movie, which will feature a teen version of the heroine, which causes mythology problems as technically Cavill's character would actually be a baby at the time. Adding the fact that Warner Bros. won't be making a follow-up Man of Steel movie anytime soon, it seems Supes is being pushed off to the sidelines.

According to a source, "Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors." Ouch!

While there is yet to be an official announcement from Warner Bros. or Cavill's reps, it seems like the actor will be joining Ben Affleck, who also isn't expected to reprise his role as the caped crusader in Matt Reeves' upcoming Batman stand-alone film.

So while the current incarnations of Superman and Batman are hanging up their capes, it seems the other superheroes that graced the screen with the pair are still moving forward. Jason Mamoa's solo Aquaman movie premieres in December. Gal Gadot is currently filming Wonder Woman 1984, and Ezra Miller is set to begin shooting his stand-alone Flash movie in early 2019.

Safe to say the current DC cinematic universe is a bit of a mess at the moment and the powers that be are trying their best to save the franchise any way they can without entirely rebooting it.

Now those rumours about Game of Thrones star Kit Harington playing Batman completely makes sense. My bets are they're relying on the Supergirl flick to take the franchise back to a period before the events of Man of Steel. Or they could just take a page out of the X-Men franchise and use The Flash to reset timelines.

Henry Cavill, we will miss your charming smile and...
