Now, this is exciting news! Deadline is reporting that the architect of the CW Arrowverse, Greg Berlanti is developing a Batwoman TV series.

While Batwoman is already scheduled to make her debut to the Arroverse for its annual crossover event in December, it now seems she may become a permanent member of it with her own series and making history in the process.

Batwoman was first introduced into DC comics in the 1950s as a love interest for Batman to dispel rumours of his own homosexuality. She was later reintroduced in 2006 with Kate Kane taking up the mantle who also happened to be a lesbian. She has since become the highest-profile openly gay character in any DC comic.

Now for the first time on any screen, Batwoman will be making her grand debut in December, while Caroline Dries is currently writing a potential pilot that will see the character not only front her own series but will also make history being the first gay lead character of a live-action superhero series.

"In Batwoman, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope."

While casting for an actress to play the character in the crossover event is yet to happen, if Batwoman goes to pilot, the same actress will go on to play the lead in it. While Dries currently doesn't work on a CW DC series, it's expected that she will have some consultation as to how the Batwoman is crafted for the crossover that spans Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.

The CW Arrowverse has a long history of LGBT+ characters being represented within its shows, this just seems like the next natural progression. Inspiring times indeed. We'll keep you posted as news unfolds.
