HOLY CRAP! After weeks of waiting for the highly anticipated Murder House crossover event, it finally arrived and did not disappoint. Titled Return to Murder House and directed by Sarah Paulson, the episode was packed to the brim with scares and homages to the first season, and may very well be the best episode of the entire series.

Last week's episode finished with Cordelia Goode deciding to send Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts), and the warlock, Behold Chablis (Billy Porter), to "Where it all began," the infamous Murder House. Their mission to find out all they could on the origins of Michael Langdon (Cody Fern). What follows is indeed a beautiful homecoming to everything we've grown to love about the series.

From the moment the episode starts, it doesn't waste any time. Madison and Behold come into possession of the house and begin their quest to find out if Michael is evil. Emma Roberts and Billy Porter are absolutely hilarious onscreen together and deserve their own spin-off series! The characters are pure sass and rebound off each other brilliantly.

The pair performs a ceremony to get access to all the ghosts. It's pretty much an all-or-nothing situation. If they want to talk to talk to some of the spirits, they're going to talk to all of the ghosts in the house. The episode then becomes a poltergeist free-for-all that allows you to catch up on some of your favourite characters from season one.

In addition to directing the episode, Paulson makes a brief appearance as the medium to the stars Billie Dean Howard, but it's when her meeting with Madison and Behold is interrupted by Jessica Lange's Constance Langdon, that true fans will be on the edge of their seat. If you thought, Madison's first line of the series was hilarious, it's nothing compared to what comes out of Constance's mouth.

There's no denying there's been somewhat of a void since Lange left the series in season 4, but for just one episode we're treated with a real gift for fans of the series. By end of the episode, we are gifted with reappearances by Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott), Tate Langdon (Evan Peters), Moira O’Hara (Frances Conroy), Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton), Violet Harmon (Taissa Farmiga), Elizabeth Short (Mena Suvari), and one hell of backstory to Michael.

So let's get to the substance of the episode. Constance refuses to open up to Madison and Behold unless they use their witchy powers to get rid of Moira. Even in the afterlife, the pair utterly despises each other. Moira finally receives the touching closure she has sought for decades in purgatory. It really is a beautiful scene, and Frances Conroy really knows how to pull at your heartstrings.

We are then given Constance's twisted story surrounding her efforts to raise Michael and how he ended up on the dark path he is on today. Hoping to make up for the mistakes she made with her son, Tate, it seems no matter what she did, Michael was always going to turn into a monster.

The short version is Michael is pure evil. Constance goes on to explain that at one point he actually aged a decade in one night while he was sleeping further cementing the fact he was to serve a higher purpose whether it be good or evil. Realising there was no hope for her grandchild, Constance chose to end her life inside the Murder House, where she could at least stay forever with her other ghost children. A depressing end to such a compelling character, but beautiful nonetheless.

Ben Harmon then fills the witch and Warlock with what happened next. After Constance's death, he took it upon himself to raise him in the hope that Michael would overcome his inner-darkness. When two women bought the house and moved in before they had even unpacked a single box Michael didn't just kill them, but he also used his powers to make their spirits cease to exist. Ben confesses that Michael was beyond his help and that's when we get our next major appearance. Enter Vivien who reconciles with Ben and tells the others that Michael just isn't evil he's the Antichrist, while also explaining how the devil child came to cross paths with Miriam (Kathy Bates) and the Church of Satan.

Before the episode wraps up, we're delivered one final piece of fan service. Madison finds Violet (Taissa Farmiga) crying over how she’s in love with an evil person, so the witch goes on to tell her that Tate’s evil left the house with Michael and opened her eyes to how these days he’s actually a pretty good guy. The teen lovers reunite, and it seems like they at least get a happily ever after.

We finally have our answers to Michael's background, and it's safe to say the world is going to hell. When you consider he's already brought on the nuclear apocalypse, we have no idea what's coming next and we LIVE for it.
